Yesterday a TV channel interviewed mexican singer Paulina Rubio, and the speaker said that she has sell 25.000.000 copies of her work in the world. Impressing, yes. And more impressing if one thinks that she is not a very good singer and not a good one writer (I´m not sure if she writes her own songs).
And that let me to think if it is better that Avril could be a mass market singer (as Paulina, or as others) or a singer and writer for a minority of people. We must keep in mind that to be a minority name is not bad at all. Think of people like Patti Smith, Ray Davies, John Fogerty or Jackson Browne: they not atrack millions of people around them, but they are respected and valorated more than other popular musiciens that sell millions of copies but are not so loved by their fans. I think that Avril is someone that can be appreciate probably for less people than other musiciens and singers, but sure more faithful. And that means that the strengh of less people could be more important that the strengh of a lot of people.

The problem with Avril is that she's signed to a BIG record label and she MUST sell records, she's gotta be mainstream. However, she's demonstrated she can be a meaningful artist and at the same time being mainstream, UMS was a prime example. Hopefully, she will demonstrate it again with next album.
Avril has a good chance to demonstrate she's not only mainstream and comercial, but also meaningful and songwriter-vibe. I hope she delivers...
